Memorial Lecture 2007

The John Wyatt-Smith Memorial Lecture Tuesday November 27th in the Joint Lecture Theatre at the Department of Plant Sciences, South Parks Rd, Oxford.

Andrew Bennett, Executive Director of Syngenta Foundation, Chairman of the Board of Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and former Chief Natural Resources Advisor of DFID, spoke on the challenge of bringing forestry knowledge to bear on today's key environmental issues.

In addition to addressing issues important to John and his family this event marked the launch of the JWS Forestry Educational Trust, a charity established to support the development of communication skills of foresters to enable forest science to be more effective in addressing the environmental issues of the day.

The evening was opened by Dr Nick Dunn, chair of the trustees of the new charity, giving   a short resume of  John Wyatt-Smith's life.  Dr Peter Wood, trustee and Vice-President of the CFA, introduced Andrew Bennett and a vote of thanks was given by Dr Deanna Donovan, trustee. The audience included a wide range of John's family, ex-colleagues and members of the Oxford and international forestry community.

Our thanks go to Prof Jane Langdale and the Dept of Plant Sciences for their generosity in hosting the event, and to Andrew Bennett for his stimulating lecture.
